It has been a very long time we could spare some time for recording the songs of the Frogs of Taiwan. So far we have only 21 species documented amongst the 32… But last Saturday (09.10.2010) we could get the Rana sauteri’s sounds. We joined a group of volunteers for rescuing this endangered specie which most recent scientific name is Pseudoamolops sauteri梭德氏赤蛙 (Boulenger, 1909) and in Chinese . This is currently their breeding season, so the frogs are migrating to the river where they gather to sing. Unfortunately bloody stupid government ingieneers built concrete walls that the animals can’t cross. So all amphibians finish their life under the wheels of passing cars. Fortunately some environment and nature lovers organize events to rescue them by watching the road area, catching the frogs and bringing them to the river. After the rescue, we could record the delicate sounds of their calls which are usually difficult to hear since the river environment is noisy  because of water streams.

星期人物－錄16種蛙鳴 澎葉生在台「蛙蛙哇」

來自法國的澎葉生（Yannick Dauby）是位聲音藝術家。過去一年半，他在台灣全島「上山下田」收錄青蛙叫聲。台灣雖小，卻蘊藏達卅二種蛙類，令長期錄製大自然聲響的他樂不可支。他說，青蛙並非只會「哇哇」叫，它的聲音極為豐富，會「嘓」、 會「哞」，還會吹口哨。

在全台卅二種蛙類中，澎葉生至今已搜集到十六種蛙聲，他的「蛙蛙哇！」專輯正是成果報告。二○○四年澎葉生第一次來到台灣，被這個環境的聲音給迷住了，街上的汽車聲、廟宇的祭典聲、山裡的蛙聲蟬聲，成為創作的素材。
「一般人雖有一雙耳朵，但是用的太少，聽得太狹隘。聲音藝術家的工作，就是讓人們有機會透過聽覺去了解環境，讓聲音有機會當主角。」

今年卅五歲的澎葉生出生在尼斯，因為父母親熱愛音樂，他從小接受古典音樂的洗禮，十三歲開始聽與古典毫不相干的死亡搖滾。「我發現音樂的世界太廣闊，莫札特的音樂只不過是人類音樂史上的一小段，為何要限制自己的耳朵！」

被搖滾震醒的澎葉生，開始到公共圖書館借回各式音樂聆聽，非洲、印度、藍調、民謠等音樂讓他樂不可支，就讀大學時，他一頭栽進人類音樂學的領域。「音樂學研究的是音樂本身，人類音樂學找尋的是音樂和文化環境的關係。」

一年半前，他隨從事視覺藝術的另一半蔡宛璇回台灣定居。去年受比利時廣播電台之邀，創作出以聲音介紹台灣夏天的作品，他以鬼月為題，將龍山寺的唱唸祭典聲、爻杯聲，融合烏來樹林裡的蟬叫聲及午後的雷陣雨，拼貼出台灣的農曆七月。「鬼月在歐洲並不存在，因此對我來說太特別了！ 」

對澎葉生來說，聲音無所不在，他與大自然為伍，不但錄製了歐洲各地的蟋蟀聲，也曾紀錄煉油廠的工業聲。而他最好奇的是，在沒有視覺的輔助下，人們聽聲音時的反應，「有一次我把在台灣錄製的環境聲，寄給我在法國的朋友，他出門時就聽著台北的街道聲，在尼斯的路上跑步。 」

他說，錄青蛙聲不稀奇，差別在於怎麼呈現。動物學家錄青蛙聲作為聲音「標本」，有些作曲家把青蛙聲當「裝飾品」和音樂融在一起，他則希望透過每軌長達三到六分鐘的蛙類原聲，讓民眾聽到大自然生態。

澎葉生強調，他不是動物專家，經常邊錄音邊Ｋ書，如今練到憑聽覺就可辨認十六種以上的蛙類。

他說，在台北縣鵝尾山錄到的「拉都希氏赤蛙」，暱稱為「拉肚子吃西瓜」，聲音像是推開舊屋的老木門，南投縣桃米社區的「腹斑蛙」聲音像小狗在抱怨。還有在土城市郊找到的「斯文豪氏赤蛙」，能量驚人，「牠們喜愛生活在急流和瀑布，為了對抗吵雜的水聲，同伴呼喊的時候會發出短促具穿透力的高聲，而且兩次叫聲之間會出現十五到廿五秒的靜默。」

青蛙很溫和，些微風吹草動就會嚇走牠，因此收音時得盡量慢步輕聲。他最痛苦的經驗，是一次全身被蚊子叮咬也不敢抓一下。

春天是青蛙求偶的季節，也是澎葉生錄音最好的時間，但也有例外，像「台灣樹蛙」的繁殖季就在冬天。每種蛙也有自己的地盤，艾氏樹蛙夜間才現身，喜歡躲在竹洞裡，澤蛙一般得在稻田裡面才能找得到。

長期聆聽蛙叫的過程中，澎葉生也發覺許多有趣現象，「蛙叫聲其實就像人聲，人聲有高低，蛙聲也一樣，同類的兩隻蛙，也會發出不同的音調。」

他聽過最High的場景是群蛙齊鳴。「雄蛙同心協力放聲吸引母蛙，但有些雄蛙希望能先馳得點，大展男高音歌喉，拚場的氣氛很緊張。」他目前正為嘉義縣文化局進行在地聲音採集與建檔計畫，問他目前最想在台灣錄製的聲音，他大聲笑說：「地震」。

回看小工  註：台灣樹蛙其實是不存在的，記者指的是台北樹蛙！此外，澤蛙除了容易出現在未受污染的稻田外，其他野外的潮濕環境也是滿容易看到的。

Taiwan, located between Japan and Philippines, possess a precious natural environment. This 68 minutes long Compact-Disc contains the songs of 16 amongst the 32 species of frogs that inhabit the island.
Realized by a sound artist who is also an amphibian enthousiast, these recordings (devoid of vocal or musical accompaniment) are not only audio documents for natural history aficionados, but propose also some listening situation for the pleasure of the ears. This work is an invitation to the delicacy of the sounds of nature in Taiwan. This CD audio is accompanied by a 28 pages booklet containing illustrations by taiwanese artists, photos and explanations about the species.

Arte-Radio is a French webradio, organized and runned by Arte channel, the cultural French-German TV broadcast.

Yannick Dauby has already participated to this great collection of audio documentaries in collaboration with Olivier Féraud, working about birdwatchers and nightjars.
