Sunday December 12th, our last day with the people of Nankeng for this year !
After six months of work, we ended by a full day of activities.

- Distribution of the Map of the 1000 Steps Old Trail and the CD (wait for the next article on this blog for more information)
- A presentation and discussion about this year’s project
- A concert by the group of musicians of Nankeng playing Beiguan (Wow ! They are playing every week now, they can perform a few times a year, and they play even better than before)
- A good meal of Hakka Food (Gui-Zhu loves cooking !)
- A hike on the 1000 Steps Old Trail, concluded by a fire and walking down in darkness with old-style torches
- Another good meal (we love the food cooked by Gui-Zhu !)
It seems that everyone was quite happy. A huge thank you to the people of Nankeng for this fantastic adventure.
A bit later we’ll build up a simple website for the village. And next year… there will be new ideas !

For the preparation of the design for the map of Qian Duan Qi (see the previous posts on this blog), we invited a teacher expert in Chinese paper cutting. Xuan Zhi 琁芝 taught some basics and invited the students (children and adults) to create a few characters and words. Results were surprising like always ! Have a look to the gallery of this event.

First steps for designing the map :

1. Finding some names for two anonymous rivers and some various spots on Qian Duan Qi 千段崎 (including sections of the old path, area nearby ruins of traditional houses, forests, etc.). 09.08.2010

2. Designing some stamps for these names. Workshop held on the 28.08.2010 under the supervision of Wan-Shuen Tsai would just learnt about this technique a few days ago…

Some pictures took on a old path (千段崎) in Nán-Kēng (南坑), Beipu (北埔), Hsinchu County (新竹縣).

Atelier Hui-Kan and the villagers of this community have a project to realize a map of this area. The path is 100 years old, it was covered by more than 1000 stones and led to fields and old houses. People left the traditional houses and fields, many stones were stolen, and some part of the path disappeared. This day, 29.08.2010, a friend (Feishu) helped us opening the track and we found back a section of the forgotten path. Recent activities concerning this project include imagining some names for two anonymous rivers, making stamps and papercuts for the design of the map, collecting sounds and images of the nature and of the traditional activities which relates to the daily life of this area…

Beiguan (北管) is a Chinese music genre still surviving in Taiwan. Its origin is related to theater, but nowaday it is mostly instrumental, and if in the past most of the temple would host a Beiguan group, it is decreasing, and people who have interest in music are more concerned by Classical Western music or (even worse) Chinese National Music (國樂).

In the village of Nán-Kēng (南坑), in Hsinchu County, some elders were still practising until four years ago, then stopped rehearsing and performing. Last year we convinced them to reform, to record a CD and to perform for some events. It seemed to work at least for a moment, since they were invited to do a few other performances. This year we hope to include some of the recordings into a sound collection related to the life of Tian Tuan Qi, an old path which is nearly forgotten…

Last year, our projects in communities, commissioned by Cultural Affairs of Hsinchu County, included a Hakka village nearby Beipu : Nán-Kēng (南坑). We had regular meetings and activities with the inhabitants, mainly older people who are treasures of knowledge about the local history and the agricultural past of this area. Their practices are still very rich and it was easy to catch their attention on it, wakening old gestures such as bamboo weaving, hand-cropping of ricefields and playing Beiguan music. We eventually released a book containing visual documentation of these events (some photos were shot by the elders themselves) and a CD devoted to the Beiguan group that we could convince to reform after four years of sleep…

This year, we are focusing on a old path, Qiān Duàn Qí 千段崎, which was once a very important road. Opened 100 years ago, it was constitued by stairs made in stone, more than 1000 pieces. It led to differents traditional houses and fields above the hills. Nowadays the path is almost forgotten, some stones have been burried or stolen. With the inhabitant we are trying to retrieve the history and stories about this old path. Write the anecdotes, document the nature around, record the sounds of the traditional practices which are related to the place, draw a map…

文化的纖維, 可以在日常生活中找到。

有時這樣的日常生活會因為種種個人或社會因素,使它的內容變得既聾又啞, 以致於這些纖維被掩埋或遺忘, 漸漸地難以被我們清楚感受到。

在南外, 我們只消與住在這裡的人們相遇, 這些因為經濟或因為家庭因素, 或是因為個人情感的連結而留在這裡居住的人, 多數都比我們大上兩、三、甚至四個世代 ( 若以十年為一個世代)。而很快地, 透過他們說出的故事, 描述的生動場景, 和各種工具的用途, 以及過去周邊的農耕環境, 和一些老照片, 我們學到許多, 也感受到了這些纖維的存在。

接著, 我們需要把它們匯聚在一起, 讓它們可以處在一個比較好的位置, 並且試著編織出一點什麼。就像用一條條的竹篾逐步編出一個美麗的籃子那樣。或許, 在不久的將來, 我們就能用類似的精神, 創造出一些現在仍無法命名的事物。

在 短短的幾個月時間中, 這些我們與社區居民一起參與的內容, 乍看之下似乎不怎麼“藝術”, 但最重要的事, 在於如何尋得這些常民生活的文化纖維, 才能在那之中看出它們及社區居民身上的藝術潛能, 並進一步地編織出屬於一個族群或社群的精神樣貌。雖然這樣的過程絕稱不上快速, 然而在這段時間之後, 我們看到這些分別出現的文化纖維顯現了彼此間的緊密關連, 一種堅實的東西穿梭在這個網絡之後, 這使得我們不禁思考到：什麼樣的內容, 才是這樣的文化可能留給未來的？

插秧時向後退開的那一步, 和為了靠近土地所形成的背脊弧度, 編織竹條時翻轉靈巧的手勢, 一小段用古老的語言悠悠唱出的歌謠 ：這不是關於鄉愁, 而是繼續創造現在。

這些時刻都非常簡單而且平凡, 卻組成了一些真正的美感經驗, 例如：勞動時身體姿態與有機重複所顯現的舞蹈特性, 組織樂音中的和諧與即興反應, 對生活中各種材質的熟悉, 還有良好的造型掌握能力。

拾藝南坑, 是一個再發現的過程,  藉著它, 集結起這段時間內的點滴實現, 也鼓勵自己和社區夥伴, 可以用另一種角度, 去觀看和聆聽自己的生活。

法國藝術家Robert Filliou 曾說：藝術, 就是那個讓生活變得比藝術本身更有意思的東西。

社區、衛生室與原計劃〈時空膠囊-衛生室製造〉

南外地區屬於典型山區客家村落，面臨長期人口外流 ，居民以年長這為主，缺乏年輕世代於社區內公共場域活動的現象。社區中年長者過去以衛生室做為主要衛生保健與疾病就診場所，對此空間極為熟悉。當數年前衛生室功能轉變成為閒置空間一段時間後，居民及南外社區發展協會主動進行內部及建物週遭整理工作，成為一複合功能空間，主要做為社區發展協會活動中心，社區老人關懷據點，基礎衛生保健(血壓測量等等無醫療行為的服務)。在社造中心夥伴的引薦下, 我們來到了這個為於北埔後方山腳下的社區。由於社區居民已主動賦予此空間新的，但仍十分基本的使用功能, 我們期待在進入社區的計畫中，進一步與居民共同改造此空間，與將原本毫無特色且純為功能性考量而建造的空間，轉化為一新的生活場域，雖保留它作為社區交流場所的角色，但增加對這個場所的其它想像，並藉此挖掘個體居民的藝能，思考如何更細緻地規劃工作坊。也期待社區居民在參與過程中逐步對此空間產生更強的認同，並以超乎我們設想的樣態，提出在地的視角。由於客家文化中的音樂傳統獨具特色，我們尋找地方具音樂才華的長者，進行樂曲錄製工作，一方面為地方常民音樂製作紀錄資料，另一方面也讓這些長者身懷的文化價值被看見。

計畫轉變：

在與南坑村參與居民的互動過程中，我們很快理解到村民對於”改造衛生室”為本計畫重點目標並不感興趣，他們更在意的，其實是將此地仍保有的常民生活以及文化資產帶引出來。因此，我們在計畫初期與參與者們取得共識並已底定社區計劃方向，將以 1. 活絡數樣當地常民生活中已近遺失的活動 (如：竹籃編製與藝術化發想，手工割稻，北管音樂)為主，並予以紀錄印製一有聲影像手冊。2. 透過工作坊中的老照片及老物件收集，和接下來將進行的”南坑與我攝像接力”活動，加以匯整，與居民一同討論如何裝置於衛生室空間中，賦與無明確形象的集會空間一個較具社群凝聚感的面貌。

計畫回顧：

在真正接觸南外社區之前，無論是計劃評審或是藝術家本身，都對衛生室的改造有著豐富的規劃想像與期待，但在一個多月後，與居民互動過程後所需面對的，則是居民對本空間的實際使用方式，以及該社區的住家分布十分分散等狀況，因此造成該衛生室即便在經過整體改造後，仍需面臨未來使用頻率偏低及地理位置不利居民日常活動等問題，也因此讓計劃產生了新的方向調整。

我們在課程中也發現，參與居民對”外來的”藝術形態並不感興趣，一方面應是由於參與者的文化養成環境仍屬於較統一的一群(年齡層及生活圈都有關係), 而且這也促使我們去思考，在這樣的生活圈中，到底何謂”藝術”？而在眾多型態的文化資產和常民活動中，隸屬於藝術的層次為何？ 例如，藝術家在互動過程中觀察到傳統種稻者的身體語言中所包藏的舞蹈特性，該如何進行，使得當地居民也能夠感知到？又，經藝術家鼓勵而重拾日常練習的樂班，該如何找到它長期的發展脈絡？

過往農村生活中其實擁有各種多元的生活技藝，當這些技藝僅被大眾視為為謀生所需而發展出的能力時，便會在現代化的過程中很快被放棄與遺忘。可以說，放棄一種身體，也就是放棄一種文化，而當一種文化消失時，集文化精華而生長的藝術便無以為根。當社群開始以另一種眼光重視一項傳統技藝的同時，其中便包含了藝術發展的能量。或許藝術家在此所應扮演的角色，除了帶入自身所擅長的藝術實踐去引動居民外，更是一個自當地生活脈絡與在地傳統中，重新提點出藝術價值的人。這當然是需要藝術家與居民雙方長期的默契培養與努力(村長兼社區發展協會總幹事葉貴霖先生是本計劃的主要動力之一)，但我們期待能在接下來的有限時間中，勉力做到一小步。

2009年八月起, 回看工作室在新竹縣地區的三個社區進行一項名為”藝術進入社區”的計劃。在社區營造精神下，尋找一個社群內的藝術性資產，嘗試挖掘社群與藝術家的遇合過程所產生的創造能量，並促生相關藝文活動…等。

這三個社群分別為：
1. 竹北市十興社區(以該社區發展協會為主體, 8月初至10月底，參與群平均年齡約50-63歲)
2. 北埔鄉南坑村 (以南外社區發展協會及南坑村民為主體, 8月中至12月中，平均年齡約45-81歲)
3. 五峰鄉桃山國小 (以桃山國小4, 5年級和社區青少年為主, 11月至12月中)。

整個計劃的進行為期二到四個月不等。在這十分短暫的時程中, 我們認為與參與社區所共同完成的，大體上是一參與社群、社群個體與創作者(我們)彼此間的藝文資源交流、體驗。這個過程讓我們得以認識彼此，並為未來可能的進一步發展建立一個較為雙向平等的基礎。藝術創作者的既定角色在這個經驗裡需不斷被檢視與調整。而在社群這方面的主體性未清楚展現之前，我們必需提醒自己莫因熟悉於”公認的藝術內容”而帶來的過於強勢導入的傾向。畢竟在這樣的過程中，該地區創意或藝術的”可延續性”，才是最值得關注的事。此外，在過程中我們也很快地發現了：依社經條件, 地理環境及文化背景的不同, 社群間所展現的差異性其實非常地可觀 (即便是同一年齡層的客家族群)。

這是回看工作室首次參與社區營造工作，參與社群也是首次觸探社區營造相關工作, 一開始難免拙於伸展…。但我們在過程中有幸接受到幾位社區營造領域專業者的啟迪和建議，他們在這些議題上擁有長期累積的經驗，以及獨到的見解，因此對於我們在計劃中的規劃和思考產生不少助益。

這個計劃的主要進行方式大致可分為三階段：

1. 針對在參與社群中觀察到且我們感興趣的面向，規劃出主題和方向。
2. 協助社群思考與籌備適合該社群進行或體現的相關計畫。
3. 陪伴社群實現與完成計劃或衍生工作。

以下是我們對三個社群所擬定的工作重點：

*   在竹北市十興社區, 我們針對的是”建築與生活環境的醒思”以及”該地區在地景上的想像空間之匱乏”兩點。

.

*   在北埔鄉南坑村，我們針對的是” 如何透過外界的美感刺激與體驗過程，使居民感受自身在早期生活經歷中所累積的常民美學能力及技藝”。

.

*  在五峰鄉桃山國小，我們針對的是”透過聆聽課程擴展並開啟這些還非常新鮮的耳朵和心靈，並在音樂教學方面協助在尋找出更寬廣的可能性”。

接下來相關的幾篇文字，將會有對我們及每個社群計劃所做的較詳細描述。
